  • IMO’s Day of the Seafarer 2020 Webinar

The Day of the Seafarer is an official UN international observance day which takes place every year on 25 June. This year, IMO will organize a Webinar meeting on 26 June to honor seafarers in the face of major issues and challenges from COVID-19. IMLA, as an NGO in consultative status with IMO, is invited to join the meeting. IMLA encourages its members and wider colleagues in the maritime and education community to participate. Please see below detailed information and arrangements.

The webinar aims to honour seafarers for the dedication and professionalism they have display over the course of the pandemic in the face of major issues and challenges, including crew changes and repatriation, access to medical care and welfare, as well as certification-related issues. Our expert panellists will highlight the contributions of seafarers and  explain what steps have been taken to support seafarers during the recent difficult months and share the best practices which have been identified in this connection.

The panel will consist of:

  • Mr. Kitack Lim, IMO Secretary-General
  • Mr. Guy Platten, Secretary-General, International Chamber of Shipping (ICS)
  • Mr. Stephen Cotton, General Secretary, International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF)
  • Fr. Paulo Prigol, South East Asia Regional Coordinator, Stella Maris
  • Mr. Niels van de Minkelis, Head Operational Affairs, Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners (KNVR)

and the webinar will be moderated by Mr. Frederick J. Kenney, Director, Legal Affairs and External Relations Division of the International Maritime Organization. Participants will be able to submit questions during the webinar through a dedicated function in the event platform.
