China to Host 2014 "Maritime Silk Road" Business School Invitational Regatta

The 2014 "Maritime Silk Road" Business School Invitational Regatta will be held in Shenzhen, China from December 19 to December 21. By bringing together business leaders from China and the broader Chinese community, the event is considered as the most influential and high-end big yacht sailing regatta in line with China's "21st Century Maritime Silk Road" and Maritime Strategy, interpreting the concept of leading a "blue lifestyle" in China and highlighting the dynamics of Chinese cities.

During the development process of the Maritime Silk Road that has been initiated in China, the commerce of big yacht sailing contributed significantly to China's foreign trade while the sport itself has stimulated exchanges with other nations in terms of economy and politics as well as having made a profound impact on the whole world. The sailing sport that combines competition, entertainment, and adventure while, at the same time, appeal to a large number of spectators, has become an important bridge for marine cultural exchanges worldwide.

After a period of rapid economic growth that has spanned more than30 years, China's decision-makers are paying attention to the vast ocean. Coming on the heels of the "Maritime Strategy" proposed during the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese government put forward the strategy of building "a Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road" (also called "One Belt, One Road"), demonstrating China's confidence and ambition in terms of connection and integration with other countries and regions of the world.

Furthermore, Chinese lifestyle has experienced tremendous changes with the development of the country's economy. The Chinese nation is gradually being transformed from a yellow civilization to blue one and from a land-based society to a maritime one. This is underlined by the rapid development and achievement made by the Chinese people in aquatic sports over the last decade.

Taking sailing as an example, the sport, which originated in Europe and is highly popular in most developed country of the West, is now becoming a symbol of new fashion and positive energy among the Chinese, especially among business school graduates. Many well-known business school alumni are stepping into the sailing sport and are active in competitive events such as the China Cup International Regatta and the Round Hainan Regatta, becoming major drivers for the interest in sailing among the greater population.

According to the organizing committee, the event this year will be held in China's famous coastal city of Shenzhen and move consecutively to several other cities across China throughout next year, showcasing the charms and attractions of Chinese cities to the world. Over the next several years, the event will be expanded to the famous ports of call along the "Maritime Silk Road" and be built into a series of regattas with international influence and power.
