Established in 1977, IMLA is recognized as an international organization representing academic and educational part of the world maritime community, and it has been accredited with Consultative Status from the UN International Maritime Organization. To better accomplish the IMLA’s ambitions which have included to promote contact and cooperation among maritime lecturers engaged in MET globally, the IMLA Committee decided to establish the IMLA Shanghai Office and ensure sustainable development using outward resources, particularly from China and Shanghai in specific.

Shanghai Maritime University has played an active role in the whole process for IMLA to register in Shanghai. Under the guidance of the Shanghai Education Commission and Shanghai Administration Bureau of NGO, the IMLA Shanghai Officer was formally registered in Shanghai this September, and now it will soon be inaugurated, making itself the city’s first international organization based in a university.

The Shanghai Office is established to provide a platform for exchange of views, practices and experiences. A wide range of activities will be also organized by the IMLA Shanghai Center such as MET forums, lecturer trainings, faculties and students exchanges, and collaboration with other MET organizations.
