IMLA21 Conference Successfully Convened at St. John’s

Delegates from around the world convened in St. John's, Canada, from October 8-12 for the 21st International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA), hosted by the Marine Institute (MI), Memorial University of Newfoundland. The conference focused on the theme, " Into the future: Challenges for MET in the 21st Century ".

The Conference was much privileged to have received a congratulatory message from IMO Secretary-general Mr. Koji Sekimizu. “IMLA, over the 30 years of its existence, has played a significant and effective role in the field of maritime education and training, bringing together maritime academics and practitioners from all around the world to share with each other their experience of teaching and studying the latest technological innovations. By doing so, it has helped to promote contact and cooperation between maritime lecturers of all disciplines.” Mr. Sekimizu expressed high appreciations on the Association in the letter. Prof. Dr. Jin Yongxing, Chair of IMLA, shared the message with all the participants during the Opening on the morning of 8th Oct.

Ms. Catherine Dutton, Head of the School of Maritime Studies, Marine Institute, brought with a welcome message from Capt. Naim Nazha, Director of Marine Personnel Standards and Pilotage on behalf of the Ministry of Transport in Canada. Also spoke at the Opening were Mr. Glenn Blackwood, Vice President of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Dean of Fisheries and Marine Institute, and Capt. Fred Anstey, the Head of Local Executive Committee of IMLA21.

A variety of topics were covered during the conference including situational awareness; recruitment and retention of seafarers; distance education and technology; participation of women in the marine industry; the new STCW standards; and human factors in Marine Education and Training (MET).

During the five day conference, the IMLA Annual General Meeting was called. A number of issues on the agenda were covered including Amendments to the Constitution, Reports of Chair, Treasurer, and from the special interest Conferences, Establishment of IMLA Shanghai Office, as well as future meeting in 2014 and 2015.
