IMLA22 Conference Held Successfully at Jimei University

Delegates from around the world convened atXiamen, China from October 10-13 for the22ndInternational Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA) .The conference,  hosted by Jimei University of China was indeed successful as a total of 66experts and scholars attended the conference covering maritime academicians, training institutions, research institute and shipping companies from around the world.

In presence of the conference were Milhar Fuazudeen, Head of Maritime Training and Human Element Section, Maritime Safety Division, IMO(International Maritime Organization), Yan Hong, Director of China’s Ministry of Transport, Dr. &Prof. Jin Yongxing, Chairman of IMLA, Prof. Ji Ke, vice president of Jimei Universtiy and other distinguished guests from German, Ghana and other countries.

Dr. &Prof. Jin Yongxing, Chairman of IMLA delivered the opening address. In his speech, he stated that the issue of human factor in this increasingly globalized shipping industry was “crucial to the safety of vessels, human life and property and marine environment“and stressed that “highquality maritime lectures and trainers are its bedrock“. Milhar Fuazudeen, Head of Maritime Training and Human Element Section, Maritime Safety Division, IMO, strongly echoed his statements and highly praised IMLA’s commitment in this regard by promoting the revision of Model course 3.17. He was grateful to IMLA for providing a platform and window for Maritime Lecturers to share their latest academic achievements and exchange ideas on improvement of maritime education. Yan Hong, Director of China’s Ministry of Transport reiterated the constant support for the Maritime Education and Training from the Chinese government.

The conference revolves around maritime education and teaching, maritime English Methodology, maritime simulator training, seafarer welfare and rights and other topics. All the academic papers were published in the book called Innovation and Exploration of Maritime Education and Training ---22nd International Maritime Lecturers Association Conference(IMLA 22)Proceedings.

 

This Conference also focused on issue and concerns of seafarers in terms of training and competence building, in particular the requirements of the STCW Convention for seafarers’ KPU in their competence to use English. Besides, the conference cast its eyes on the role of trainers and teachers.

The 4 day conference concluded with fruitful results.The 23rd IMLA conference is to be held in 2015 at South Africa Durban University of Technology(DUT).
