The Opening Ceremony of LNG Ship Operations and Management Training Course was Held at SMU

Shanghai Maritime University

Oct 18, 2013

On the morning of October 14, a simple but solemn opening ceremony of LNG ship operations and management training course was held at the meeting room of Hai Yun building, Lingang campus of SMU. Vice president of SMU, Prof. Yang Wanfeng, Asia representative of Cambridge Academy of Transport, Mr. Morgan, together with experts from Braemar Engineering and Honeywell attended. The ceremony was hosted by the director of International Office, Ms. Yu Hongrong.

Prof. Yang Wanfeng said in his speech that in recent years, along with an increased demand for the international liquefied natural gas (LNG), LNG ship transport has developed rapidly around the world while orders for LNG ship continue to grow. China also engaged in strengthening the investment on LNG ship industry. To ensure navigation safety, the Manila amendments to the STCW Convention changed the traditional rules that only give license to the suitable LNG ship crew, and define a clear minimum standard for mandatory training and working. Such significant change urged states parties to reinforce crew training and ship management. Currently, the domestic ship operations and management training is in early stages of development with few training agencies, immature knowledge system, few relative practice opportunities and incomplete industry and management standard issued by the concerned competent authorities. In this background, it is essential to conduct LNG ship operations and management training course, promoting the sound development of domestic LNG ship training market.

Mr. Morgan appreciated the efforts of joint training for LNG ship operations and management made by Prof. Jin Yongxing, vice president of SMU and International Office, and thanked Continuing Education College of SMU for their preparations in teaching arrangement and gathering students.

In order to learn and share international advanced experience as well as improve SMU’s or even China’s LNG ship operations and management, SMU invited Cambridge Academy of Transport, Braemar Engineering and Honeywell to participate in course development, and hired foreign experts from the above well-known companies to conduct lectures by making full use of the existing educational resources.

The training program will last for a week with the entire course taught in English. There are altogether 35 students from maritime colleges, maritime safety administrations and ship management companies around the country attended the course. This program will fill in the gaps of domestic training for LNG ship operations and management, perfect LNG ship knowledge system and push forward the sound and rapid development of Chinese LNG ship industry.
