PROMERC Meetings Held at WMU

Two meetings were recently held at WMU in relation to the PROMERC project, including a two-day workshop held on 15 and 16 May as well as the Ethics Advisory Board (EAB) meeting on 16 May. Five organizations participated in the meeting with WMU represented by Associate Professor Carolina Romero, Associate Professor Aref Fakhry and by Research Associate Matteo Del Chicca.

Day one of the workshop focused on piracy counter measures including evidence to date, proposed ways forward, assessment of CM utility, cost benefit logic, and an introduction to various scenarios. Individuals from 12 different organizations participated in the workshop including WMU Research Associate Matteo Del Chicca. Day two focused on political, economic, ethical, social, and legal issues (PEESLE analysis).

PROMERC (Non-military protection measures for merchant shipping against piracy - Capability Project or Coordination and Support Action) is an EU Research Project that aims to reduce the vulnerability of EU merchant fleets and maritime supply lines to criminal abduction and extortion and thereby reduce risk to mariners, shipping and the environment while also reducing costs and remaining cognizant of legal and social constraints.
