Spanish-speaking Corporate EPDC on the Law of the Sea delivered
The World Maritime University developed a custom-made Corporate Executive Development Course on the Law of the Sea for the General Maritime Directorate of Colombia (DIMAR). The course was delivered in Spanish by Associate Professor María Carolina Romero in Bogota, Colombia in November 2014 to participants from DIMAR and the Colombian Navy (ARC).
Participants ranging from senior and mid-level managers to naval officers took part in this intensive 7-day program, which provided a complete overview of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 1982. The program included a broad outline of the main activities regulated by the Law of the Sea, such as the limits of maritime zones, the rights of passage and navigation of vessels, peace and security of oceans and seas and the protection and preservation of the marine environment.
General topics of discussion included concepts of territorial sovereignty and sovereign rights, methods applicable to maritime boundary delimitations, the role of the jurisprudence on the development of rules to maritime delimitation and dispute settlement mechanisms established by UNCLOS.
Versatile questions from the audience kept broadening the framework for technical and academic discussion and this training session departed from the traditional perspective that confines Law of the Sea to rules of maritime delimitation and offered a more comprehensive view of the whole legislative framework established by the Convention on several areas such as maritime security and marine scientific research.
The course also included a series of interactive workshops and simulation exercises.
Associate Professor Romero has been lecturing on Law of the Sea at Masters level for over a decade. She organizes WMU's Annual Moot Court on the Law of the Sea for the Maritime Law and Policy specialization program.
