SUNY Maritime College Announces Interim Provost

State University of New York Maritime College

November 4, 2013

Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Gil Traub has agreed to serve as Interim Provost, effective today.  In that capacity, Dr. Traub will oversee the entire academic program, including academic support activities.

Dr. Gilbert Traub has a B.A. in Mathematics from Queens College CUNY, and an M.S. in Mathematics and Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from NYU.

Dr. Traub joined the Maritime College faculty in 1975 and was promoted to professor rank in 1993.   He supervised the Mathematics / Computer Science group within the Science Department from 1986 to 2012, playing a key role in the development of placement testing, pre-calculus courses, the calculus sequences, and individual course content.   In 2005, he was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Since 2006, Dr. Traub has served as Maritime College's Associate Provost and Academic Dean (currently continuing with the latter position).   In these positions, he has supervised the Registrar’s Office, and his main interests have included curriculum design and the transfer credit evaluation process.   He was the lead academic administrator in the conversion to Banner and has recently been our primary local scribe for the Banner Degree Works project.

Dr. Traub has also had varied work experiences outside of the academic world.   He has been a programmer and applied mathematician at Bell Laboratories and at the Elias Sports Bureau.   And, for something completely different, he was a therapist at the clinic of Washington Square Institute, where he earned a certificate in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

Please join me in thanking Dr. Traub for his dedication to Maritime College.

Regards,

Michael A. Cappeto

Interim President
