WMU Partners on Climate Change Adaptation in the Coastal Zone Seminar

From 5-6 April, the first coastal seminar organized by Föreningen Vatten (Swedish Association for Water), a non-profit association for knowledge about water, took place at WMU. The event was a joint effort in cooperation with Föreningen Vatten, Lund University, SEA-U, and WMU. The aim of the event was to increase knowledge sharing between research and practice, to create a platform for networking, and to encourage collaboration between engineers, planners and biologists.

The event brought together over 60 participants from various organizations in Sweden as well as Denmark and the Netherlands. Key topics discussed included coastal zone management and coastal protection, responsibility and legal matters, ecosystem services and environmental impact, and risks, warning systems, and communications.

Professor Neil Bellefontaine, Vice President Academic delivered welcome remarks and made a presentation to the group about WMU. The University was further represented by Professor Larry Hildebrand who presented Fifty Years of Coastal Zone Management: Evolution and Emerging Challenges, and Jenny Larsson, Research Expert, who presented Pollution and Sealevel Rise: The Case for Coastal Spatial Planning in North-eastern Skåne.

Participation in, and hosting of, the event supports WMU’s commitment to collaboration with regional entities and partners as well as the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda particularly Goal 4: ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; Goal 13: take urgent action to combat climate change; and Goal 14: conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
