WMU PM and SML Field Study to Denmark/Germany, 2014

The Port Management (PM) and Shipping Management & Logistics (SML) field study trip to Denmark and Germany took place from 2 to 6 June, 2014. The group’s 40 students were accompanied by Assistant Professor Lisa Froholdt and Associate Professor Yoshinobu Takei.

Two intensive days were spent in Copenhagen.  At the Danish Shipowners’ Association, after an introduction Mr.  Jacob K. Clasen, Director, the students listened to a number of presentations covering EU/International regulation of shipping as well as piracy. At the DS Norden, the students enjoyed a presentation by Mr. Erik Carlsen on ship management cost as well as a guided tour of Bryghuset.  At J. Lauritzen, material was presented by Mr. Jens Søndergaard, Senior Vice President , and other members of the J. Lauritzen Group introducing various elements of the work of J. Lauritzen.

After completing theprogramme in Copenhagen, the students moved on to Hamburg, where they first visited the Port of Hamburg. At the Altenwerder Container Terminal, they were welcomed by Captain M. Bieschke, who explained how the Terminal works using a model and gave a guided bus tour of the terminal. The group also enjoyed a bus tour and a presentation by  Mr. Bernfusher from Unikai about the handling of goods, in particular by RoRo berths. Moving to the Fruit Centre within the same multipurpose terminal ( O’Swaldkai), the students had the opportunity to walk through various parts of the buildings, where they familiarized themselves with its work , presented by Mr. Axel Hoeckrich, and in particular the process through which bananas are imported from overseas and transported to the German and neighbouring countries’ markets.

On 5 June, the group visited the Hamburg School of Business Administration, where the students were warmly welcomed by Professor Orestis Schinas, a WMU alumnus (1998, MSc Shipping Management /Commercial). Following his presentation, three experts provided insights into their respective fields: hedging, German shipping and maritime cluster, and shipping pools.

The trip was concluded with a visit to DNV GL on 6 June. There, the students enjoyed presentations by Ms. Lea-Valeska Giebel and four other DNV GL experts, including:  the work of the new DNV GL Group, current policy issues of interest for maritime affairs, services of a classification society, legal matters of a classification society and flag state affairs.

Throughout the trip, the students enjoyed insights into the various fields covered and actively participated in discussions with experts.
